April: Borrowing Habits of the Nation

The ‘most borrowed statistics’ are compiled by the PLR Office from data provided by library services around the country.

The Top 10 National List of Most Borrowed Titles and Authors below is compiled using the Top 100 titles from each of the public library authorities.

The data below are from April 2009.

The influence of one event in Dublin City Libraries in April is very evident in the Top 10 list of most borrowed books. The Dublin: One City, One Book project is designed to encourage everyone in the city to read the same book during the month of April each year.

Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula‘ was the book chosen for April which has resulted in its placing at number one on the list. The Secret Scripture placed at number five won two awards at the Irish Book Awards ceremony Dublin’s Mansion House Round Room on Wednesday 6th May. The novel won in the two categories in which it was nominated: Irish Novel of the Year and the RTÉ Radio 1’s ‘The Tubridy Show’ Listeners’ Choice Award.

Children’s books continue to be very popular with Irish readers and the first three authors in the ‘Top 10’ authors list for April 2009 are children’s authors.

The most popular author in Irish libraries continues for the fourth month to be the prolific Francesca Simon. Jacqueline Wilson continues in second position followed by Daisy Meadows, creator of the Rainbow Magic series in third.

Books by Irish authors continue to be very popular with Irish library users. The most borrowed Irish author, coming in fourth was Maeve Binchy. Other Irish authors appearing in the Top 10 list are Bram Stoker and Cathy Kelly.
